Bluesky added native video in late 2024 and has loosened the limits since: as of June 2026 clips can run up to 3 minutes, up from the original 60 seconds. The timeline displays video at its native aspect ratio inside the post card, so 16:9 landscape (1920 × 1080 px), vertical 9:16, and square all work — pick the shape that matches the footage rather than forcing a crop. Playback starts muted in the feed, as on every other network.
| Variant | Dimensions | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape (recommended) | 1920 × 1080 pxNatural fit for the timeline card and reused YouTube/screen content. | 16:9 |
| Vertical | 1080 × 1920 pxReuses your Reels/TikTok/Shorts master. | 9:16 |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
Bluesky overlays playback controls and the mute toggle along the bottom edge of the video card, so keep captions and key action out of the bottom ~15%. Vertical clips appear inside the post card rather than full-screen, meaning your 9:16 master shows smaller than it does on TikTok — text sized for full-screen vertical can become squint material here. When in doubt, bump caption size up a notch.
Bluesky’s feed plays video silently, and the platform’s strong accessibility culture extends to video — captioned clips get shared by accounts that won’t boost uncaptioned ones. Burn subtitles into the safe area of the frame, and use the alt-text field on the video for a one-line description of what happens. Both cost minutes and measurably widen reach.
Bluesky is conversation-first; video performs as a post enhancer, not a destination format. A 20-second demo, a clip of a talk, a screen recording of the bug you’re describing — these fit the feed. Three-minute produced epics mostly go unwatched. Lead with a text hook that stands alone, attach the clip as evidence, and reply to commenters.
Bluesky re-encodes whatever you send, so uploading a 4 GB master gains nothing over a clean 1080p H.264 export at a moderate bitrate — it just uploads slower and gives the transcoder more to mangle. Export 1080p at roughly 8–12 Mbps; the result survives Bluesky’s pipeline visibly better than oversized files.
1920 × 1080 px (16:9) for landscape or 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) for vertical — Bluesky displays native ratios in the post card, so export to match the footage. MP4 with H.264 is the safe format.
Up to 3 minutes as of June 2026. Bluesky launched video at 60 seconds and has extended the ceiling since, so check the composer for the current limit on your account.
Bluesky transcodes every upload to streaming-friendly renditions. Export a clean 1080p H.264 file at a moderate bitrate instead of a huge master — the transcoder preserves well-prepared files much better.
