What Open Graph is

Open Graph (OG) is a web protocol — introduced by Facebook in 2010 and since adopted broadly — that defines a set of HTML meta tags letting webpage owners specify how their URLs are previewed when shared on social networks. The four core tags are og:title (the headline in the preview card), og:description (the summary text), og:image (the thumbnail), and og:url (the canonical address). Without these tags, platforms attempt to extract the same information automatically from page text and other metadata, with inconsistent and often unflattering results.

Why link previews matter

When you post a URL to a social network, the platform fetches the page's Open Graph tags and assembles the preview card the audience sees beneath the post — the image, headline, and description. Many viewers decide whether to click based on that card, often without reading the caption at all. A well-crafted og:image and og:title written for reader benefit can meaningfully outperform a generic auto-extracted preview that pulled a site logo and an HTML title tag written for SEO rather than for social sharing.

A concrete example

A company shares a blog post URL on LinkedIn without Open Graph tags. The preview card auto-selects a generic site header and displays the page's HTML title: "Blog – Company Name." After adding og:title ("Five pricing mistakes that kill conversion"), og:description (a one-sentence reader benefit), and og:image (a purpose-built visual), the same URL earns noticeably more clicks in subsequent shares — the only change was what the preview card communicated.

How to implement and verify Open Graph tags

OG tags are placed inside the <head> element of an HTML page. Most content management systems and frameworks support them natively or through widely available plugins. After publishing or updating tags, validate the preview using Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector. Both tools render a live preview, list the detected tags, and offer a cache-clearing option that forces the platform to re-fetch updated metadata — essential when a previously shared URL's tags have changed.

Where SocialKit fits

Every link you schedule through SocialKit benefits from well-configured Open Graph tags — the preview card is what your audience sees first in the feed, and SocialKit's built-in analytics show which links drove the most clicks so you can connect OG quality to real traffic.
