SectionWhat to define / guiding questionExampleYour notes
Business goal / objective (SMART)What measurable outcome should social drive, by when? Make it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound.e.g. Grow newsletter sign-ups from social to 300/month by Q4
Target audience / personaWho are you trying to reach? Sketch their role, goals, pain points and where they already spend time online.e.g. Early-stage founders, time-poor, learn in short video / threads
Brand voice & positioningHow should you sound, and what one thing do you want to be known for? List 3 voice traits and your positioning line.e.g. Practical, warm, no jargon — "the no-fluff social tool for small teams"
Competitive landscape notesWhich 2-4 accounts compete for the same attention? Note what works for them and the gap you can own.e.g. Competitor A wins on memes; gap = honest behind-the-scenes
Platform & rationale (per network)Which networks will you commit to, and why each one? Tie every platform to the audience and a format you can sustain.e.g. Instagram (Reels for reach), LinkedIn (founder POV), TikTok (how-to)
Content pillars (3-5 themes)What recurring themes will most posts ladder up to? Pick 3-5 so your feed stays varied but on-message.e.g. Education · Behind the scenes · Customer proof · Product · Community
Posting cadence per platformHow often will you realistically post on each network? Set a cadence you can keep, not an aspirational one.e.g. Instagram 4x/week, LinkedIn 3x/week, TikTok 2x/week (confirm best times separately)
KPIs / success metrics per goalWhich metric proves each goal is working? Map one primary KPI per goal, plus a guardrail metric.e.g. Sign-ups from social (primary), engagement rate (guardrail)
Budget & resourcesWhat time, people and spend can you commit? Note who creates, who approves, and any ad or tool budget.e.g. 1 part-time creator, founder approves, no paid budget yet
Review cadenceWhen will you review results and adjust? Set a recurring check-in and what you will look at each time.e.g. Monthly: review KPIs vs goals, prune what underperforms

Fill in one row per strategy section — the "Your notes" column is yours to complete. The examples are illustrative; replace them with your own.

What's inside

Section
The ten building blocks of a social strategy, from goals down to your review rhythm. Work top to bottom — each section builds on the one above it.
What to define / guiding question
A prompt for each section so you are never staring at a blank box. Answer the question in plain language; you can refine it later.
Example
An obviously illustrative sample answer ("e.g. ...") to show the level of detail expected. These are placeholders, not benchmarks — overwrite them.
Your notes
Your actual answer for each section. This is the column you fill in; once complete, this single page is your working strategy brief.

How to use this template

  1. Open the strategy worksheet

Download the ten-section worksheet as a CSV for Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, or copy it straight into a sheet with one click — no import dialog and no account. It also prints as a one-page strategy brief.

  2. Read the guiding question for each section

Each of the ten rows poses one question — from your SMART goal down to your review cadence. The Example column shows the level of detail to aim for.

  3. Fill in the "Your notes" column

Answer each section in your own words. Start with the business goal and audience; the pillars, platforms and cadence flow naturally once those two are clear.

  4. Turn pillars and cadence into a calendar

Take your content pillars and posting cadence into the free content calendar template (or tool) and schedule real posts against them — that is where strategy becomes execution.

  5. Schedule and publish with SocialKit

Once your plan is set, schedule and cross-post to your chosen networks from SocialKit — see how each network publishes so you know what to expect when a post goes live.

  6. Review on your chosen cadence

At each review (monthly works for most teams), check your KPIs against each goal and adjust pillars, platforms or cadence. Update the worksheet so it stays a living document.

Best practices

  • Write the business goal as a real SMART statement — vague goals like "grow our following" cannot be measured, so you never learn what is working.
  • Pick fewer platforms done well over many done thinly; tie every network you choose to a specific audience and a format you can sustain.
  • Keep content pillars to 3-5 so your feed stays varied but recognisable; every post should ladder up to one of them.
  • Set a posting cadence you can actually keep, then confirm the timing separately — best posting times vary by network and audience and shift over time (as of June 2026), so use a data tool rather than guessing.
  • Pair each goal with exactly one primary KPI plus a guardrail metric, so you optimise for the right thing without quietly hurting another.
  • Treat the worksheet as living — revisit it on your review cadence and prune what underperforms instead of letting the strategy go stale.

Do it in SocialKit

Once your pillars and cadence are set, build them into a calendar and schedule across your chosen networks from one place. SocialKit auto-publishes where the network allows it and sends a publish notification where it does not, so you always know how each post will go out.
