What a brand style guide is

A brand style guide (sometimes called a brand book or brand guidelines) defines how a brand should be represented across all touchpoints. It typically covers visual standards — primary and secondary color palettes with hex or CMYK values, approved typefaces and type hierarchy, logo usage rules and clear-space requirements — alongside tone-of-voice guidance: the words the brand uses, the register it adopts, and things it deliberately avoids. Effective guides can be a tight single document a new designer or copywriter can apply on day one.

Why it matters for social media

Social media multiplies the surfaces where a brand appears: posts, cover photos, Stories, profile images, Reels overlays, comment replies. Without a style guide, each team member interprets the brand differently — a logo goes on a background it clashes with, a headline uses the wrong font, a customer service reply sounds nothing like the brand’s marketing voice. The cumulative effect is incoherence, which erodes the trust that consistent branding builds over time. A style guide is the single source of truth.

A worked example

A D2C food brand onboards a new social media manager. Without guidelines, she uses a slightly different shade of green in every graphic, rotates among three fonts, and adopts a casual tone the brand has never used. With a style guide covering color values, approved assets, caption tone, and emoji policy, her first week of posts is visually indistinguishable from her predecessor’s — brand continuity maintained without a single revision round.

What to include

At minimum: exact color values, approved logo files and usage rules, primary and secondary typefaces, and a tone-of-voice summary with before-and-after examples. For social specifically, add platform-by-platform image size specifications, profile asset dimensions, hashtag conventions, and guidance on how the brand handles user replies. Treat it as a living document — review it annually or after any brand refresh.
