What search intent is

Search intent — also called user intent or query intent — is the reason a person types a particular phrase into a search engine. Practitioners commonly group intent into four broad types: informational (learning something), navigational (reaching a specific site or page), commercial (researching before a purchase), and transactional (ready to buy or act). Search engines have become increasingly good at inferring intent rather than just matching keywords, which is why two similarly worded queries can return very different results. Understanding intent is the foundation of modern SEO because it determines what kind of content will actually satisfy the searcher.

How it shows up in social and search

Matching intent means matching format. An informational query rewards a thorough guide or explainer; a transactional query rewards a product or landing page. On social platforms, the equivalent is recognising that a user scrolling a feed has different intent than someone actively searching a platform’s search bar — social discovery is often browsing rather than seeking. As platforms like TikTok and Pinterest are increasingly used as search engines, aligning content with what users are actually looking for has become as relevant on social as it is in traditional web search.

How to apply it

To work with search intent, look at what already ranks for a query — the format of the top results reveals what search engines have judged to satisfy that intent. If the page-one results are all how-to guides, a product page is unlikely to rank there no matter how well optimised. Mapping keywords to their intent type and then building the matching content format is more effective than optimising for the keyword alone. Misjudging intent is one of the most common reasons well-written content fails to rank.
