What is a Mention? Definition & How It Works

Quick definition

A mention is tagging another account with the @ symbol in a post, story, or comment — it notifies the account and links readers straight to their profile.

Mention, explained

What a mention is

A mention (or tag) is an @username reference inside a post, comment, story, or reply. The platform turns it into a link to that profile and notifies the mentioned account. Mentions come in several flavors — in-text mentions, photo and video tags, story tags, and replies — and the word also covers any time someone names your brand in their own content, which is the unit social monitoring tools count.

Why mentions matter

Outbound, mentions are a collaboration lever: tagging a partner, customer, or creator invites them to reshare your post to their own audience — earned reach with a built-in endorsement. Inbound, mentions of your brand are the raw feed of social customer service and reputation: questions, praise, complaints, and user-generated content all arrive as mentions, and how fast you respond shapes how public those moments stay.

A concrete example

A software company announces an integration and mentions the partner’s handle on each network. The partner reshares to an audience the company could never reach alone, and the announcement earns several times its typical reach. The same week, a frustrated customer mentions the brand in a complaint; a helpful reply within the hour turns the thread into a public demonstration of support instead of an unanswered grievance.

How to use mentions well

Mention accounts that have a genuine reason to care — gratuitous tagging of big accounts reads as engagement begging. Verify handles per network before publishing: the same partner is often @acme on X, @acme-inc on LinkedIn, and @acme.app on Threads, and a wrong tag notifies a stranger or nobody at all. Inbound, check your notifications and brand mentions at least daily, and answer the public ones publicly.

Where SocialKit fits

Partner handles rarely match across networks — SocialKit’s per-platform customization lets you adjust every version of a post before it publishes, so each mention points at the right account on each network.
