Employee advocacy is the practice of employees sharing company-related content on their own social accounts — product launches, job openings, milestones, behind-the-scenes moments, or their own professional takes. It ranges from purely organic (people share because they want to) to formal programs with content libraries, suggested copy, and internal champions. LinkedIn is the natural home for B2B advocacy, but the mechanics work anywhere employees have real networks.
People trust people. A post from a recognizable human typically lands differently than the same message from a logo, and practitioners widely observe that personal accounts out-engage brand pages per follower. The arithmetic of networks does the rest: even a mid-sized team’s combined connections usually dwarf the brand page’s following many times over. Advocacy also distributes credibility — recruiting posts from actual engineers, customer stories from the support team — in a way a brand account cannot manufacture alone.
A 50-person company has a brand page with 5,000 followers. If employees average 800 connections each, their combined first-degree network is 40,000 people — eight times the brand page. When 20 employees share a launch post and each share reaches even 150 of their connections, that is 20 × 150 = 3,000 additional impressions from trusted sources, on top of whatever the brand page achieved — and each one arrives with a name and a face attached.
Make sharing easy and strictly optional — a library of ready content with suggested copy that people are encouraged to rewrite in their own voice. Scripts kill the authenticity that makes advocacy work. Ask employees to be transparent about where they work, brief them on confidentiality basics, and measure with UTM-tagged links so traffic from advocacy is visible in analytics.
