Share of engagement is a competitive metric: the interactions your brand earns — likes, comments, shares — expressed as a percentage of the total interactions earned by you and the competitors you track over the same period. It is the sibling of social share of voice, which divides up the category’s mentions; share of engagement divides up the category’s audience response instead. Voice measures who gets talked about; engagement share measures whose content people actually react to.
Most engagement metrics grade you against yourself, which hides relative decline — your interactions can grow 10% in a quarter where a competitor’s grew 60%. Share of engagement catches that. It also corrects for noisy posting volume: a rival publishing five times more than you may still earn a smaller share of the category’s response, which tells you their volume is not landing. As a strategy input, the trend shows whether your formats and topics are winning attention from rivals or ceding it.
In a month, your posts collect 4,500 interactions, competitor A’s collect 9,000, and competitor B’s collect 1,500 — a category total of 15,000. Your share of engagement is 4,500 ÷ 15,000 × 100 = 30%. Next month you grow to 5,000, but A surges to 14,000 while B drops to 1,000: 5,000 ÷ 20,000 = 25%. Your absolute engagement rose; your competitive position fell — exactly the kind of shift only a relative metric can show.
Your own numbers come from native analytics or your scheduling tool. Competitor numbers require counting public engagement on their posts — manually on a fixed sample (say, the last 20 posts each month) or via competitive-analysis tools. Keep the window, networks, and competitor set identical every period; the trend is the product, and inconsistency destroys it.
