What a lookalike audience is

You give the ad platform a “seed” — a customer list, your website visitors, people who engaged with your content — and its models find users who share traits with that seed: interests, behaviors, demographics. Meta and TikTok offer the feature under the lookalike name; on Meta you also choose a size, from 1% of the target country’s users (closest match) up to 10% (broader but looser). Some platforms have retired standalone lookalikes in favor of automated, AI-driven targeting that uses similar signals under the hood.

Why it matters

Lookalikes answer the prospecting question — who should see this ad next? — with evidence instead of guesswork. Their quality is inherited: a seed of real buyers or genuinely engaged followers produces a sharp lookalike, while a seed padded with bought followers or giveaway entrants teaches the model the wrong lesson. In other words, the health of your organic audience literally becomes targeting data the moment you use it as a seed.

A concrete example

Suppose you upload a seed of 2,000 past purchasers and ask Meta for a 1% lookalike in a market with roughly 200 million users — that yields an audience of about 2 million people who most resemble your buyers. A 5% version would be around 10 million: more scale, less similarity. Testing the 1% against the 5% with identical creative tells you whether precision or volume earns the cheaper conversion for your offer.

How to apply it

Mind the minimums — Meta requires at least 100 seed members from a single country, and platform guidance has suggested seeds in the low thousands work well. Prefer high-intent seeds (purchasers over page viewers), refresh them as new customers accumulate, and test lookalikes against the platform’s broad automated targeting: on some accounts the automation now wins, and the only way to know is to run both.

Where SocialKit fits

Lookalikes inherit the quality of their seed — and a genuinely engaged organic audience, the kind a consistent SocialKit posting schedule across 11 networks helps you build, makes a far better seed than bought followers ever will.
