What is Retargeting? Definition & How It Works

Quick definition

Retargeting shows ads to people who have already interacted with your brand — site visitors, video viewers, past customers — instead of cold audiences.

Retargeting, explained

What retargeting is

Retargeting (Google has historically called it remarketing) builds ad audiences from prior interactions. The classic source is website behavior captured by a pixel or conversions API — people who viewed a product, abandoned a cart, read a pricing page. Social platforms add on-platform sources: people who watched your videos, engaged with your posts, visited your profile, or appear on a customer list you upload. The ad then re-enters their feed with a message that assumes the first meeting already happened.

Why it matters

Warm audiences have already passed the hardest step — knowing you exist — and advertisers commonly report higher click-through and conversion rates from retargeting than from cold prospecting, though the exact gap varies by offer and market. Privacy changes matter here: Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompts and tightening browser cookie policies have shrunk off-platform retargeting pools, pushing advertisers toward first-party data and on-platform engagement audiences — the kind that consistent organic posting quietly builds for you.

A concrete example

Say a month of scheduled short-form videos accumulates 12,000 viewers on one platform. You build an audience from the roughly 4,000 people who watched at least half, then run a launch offer to them for €120. If 12 of them buy, your cost per sale is 120 ÷ 12 = €10 — reached entirely through attention your organic content earned first. A cold campaign would have paid to create that familiarity before it could convert it.

How to set it up

Install the platform pixel or conversions API on your site, create engagement-based audiences in the ads manager, and segment by recency and intent — a cart abandoner from yesterday deserves a different message than a video viewer from last month. Exclude recent purchasers, cap frequency so the same person isn’t hit daily, and refresh creative before fatigue sets in.

Where SocialKit fits

On-platform retargeting pools grow out of organic engagement — SocialKit’s best-time auto-posting and content calendar keep every network active, so video viewers and post engagers keep flowing into the audiences your ads can use.
