What SEM is

Search engine marketing is the practice of gaining visibility on search-engine results pages through paid advertising. When someone searches a keyword, SEM ads can appear above or alongside the organic results, usually labelled as ads. The dominant model is pay-per-click: advertisers bid on keywords and pay only when a user clicks. While some definitions historically included search engine optimisation (SEO) under the SEM umbrella, in current usage SEM most often refers specifically to the paid side of search, with SEO treated as the separate, organic discipline. Google Ads is the most widely used SEM platform, alongside other search engines’ ad networks.

How SEM works

An SEM campaign starts with keyword research to identify the terms prospective customers search, then organises those keywords into ad groups with matching ad copy and landing pages. Advertisers set bids and budgets and enter an auction each time a relevant search occurs; placement is decided by a blend of bid and quality signals such as ad relevance and landing page experience. Because search captures active intent — people are already looking for something — SEM is prized for reaching users at a high-consideration moment, and its results are highly measurable through clicks, conversions, and cost-per-acquisition tracking.

What it means for marketers

SEM is most powerful for demand capture: reaching people who are already searching for what you offer. It complements SEO, which builds durable organic visibility over time, and social advertising, which creates demand among people not yet searching. The main levers of efficiency are keyword selection, match types, negative keywords to filter irrelevant traffic, ad relevance, and landing page quality. Continuous testing and bid management keep cost per acquisition in check, since search auctions are competitive and prices shift with demand.
