Also known as UTM, UTM Parameter.
Quick definition
A UTM code is a snippet of text appended to a URL so analytics tools can identify which social post, campaign, or platform drove each visit to your site.
UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module — a naming convention that predates Google Analytics but is now a universal standard read by virtually all web analytics platforms. A UTM-tagged URL includes one or more parameters after a question mark: utm_source (which site or platform), utm_medium (the type of channel, such as "social" or "email"), utm_campaign (the campaign name), and optionally utm_content (to distinguish between two links in the same post) and utm_term (for keyword-level tracking in paid search). The parameters travel with the URL click and are read by your analytics tool on arrival.
Social platforms often send traffic that analytics tools misclassify or lump together. Without UTM parameters, all LinkedIn traffic appears under a single "linkedin.com" referral entry — you can’t tell whether the click came from an organic post, a personal DM share, or a newsletter reference that happened to link to LinkedIn first. UTM codes solve that by embedding your classification directly into the URL, so the attribution you see in analytics is exactly what you labeled when you created the link.
A marketing team publishes the same blog post link to Twitter and Instagram in the same week. Without UTM codes, analytics shows two referral entries: twitter.com and instagram.com. With UTM codes — utm_source=twitter and utm_source=instagram, both with utm_medium=social and utm_campaign=june-blog-launch — they see that Twitter sent 180 sessions at a 3.2% conversion rate and Instagram sent 55 sessions at a 5.8% conversion rate. Instagram sent fewer people who converted at a higher rate — a decision-changing insight that raw referral data would have buried.
Standardize your parameter values in a shared naming convention (all lowercase, hyphens not spaces, consistent campaign slugs) so that "Social" and "social" don’t appear as two different medium segments in your data. Use a UTM builder — Google Analytics and most analytics platforms include one — or a spreadsheet to generate and store links. Use a URL shortener for any link where the raw UTM string would be unwieldy or where character limits apply.
